Myanmar is one of our favourite places on the planet and, when planning our trip, we were keen to explore the country in style. We did extensive research on the best luxury hotel options in Yangon and have put together a list of our favourite five star options which we recommend in the city to help you plan your luxury hotel stay in Yangon.
1 | The Strand
The Strand Hotel is a Myanmar icon and is widely regarded as one of the finest luxury hotels in Yangon. It’s the perfect mix of old world colonial charm combined with modern luxuries and the building is an architectural delight. We couldn’t resist taking a step back in time to embrace its old world charm and British colonial elegance.
Location: The Strand is excellently located along the Yangon River and Chinatown, the Sule and Botataung Pagodas and the Aung Sang Market are less than a 20 minute walk away. It’s a short taxi ride to the other major sights including the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Yangon luxury hotel tip: even if you don’t stay at the Strand pop in to admire its grandeur and while away an afternoon sipping on the excellent cocktails in Sarkie’s Bar.
2 | Belmond Governor’s Residence
Set in leafy gardens, the five star colonial style Belmond Governor’s Residence is another of Yangon’s best luxury hotels and is the old residence of a former governor. The rooms are luxurious and well appointed and the outdoor pool is perfect to melt into after a hard day of sightseeing in Yangon!
Location: The leafy surroundings of the Governor’s Residence are located a little outside the centre of Yangon but taxis are readily available throughout the city.

3 | Chatrium Hotel Royal Lake
The modern and bustling Chatrium Royal Lake was our home for our first two nights in Myanmar. The hotel has a host of restaurants (we even had a fantastic sushi lunch!) and amenities such as currency exchange. We opted for a Club Room which included an airport transfer, 2 pieces of laundry per day and snacks and drinks in the Club Lounge. After a long journey from Ireland it was amazing to be whisked from the airport in a waiting car and have food and drinks at hand until our jet lag passed!
Location: we loved the location and spent lots of time in the calm oasis of the nearby Kandawgyi Park. The Shewadgon Pagoda was a relaxed 35 minute stroll although it was easy to grab a taxi. For day trips the hotel offered a driver/car for a reasonable US $70 and we loved the air conditioned jaunts between our chosen must see sights and some excellent recommendations from our driver.

4 | Novotel Yangon Max
A modern addition to the Yangon luxury hotel mix, the Novotel Yangon Max is a popular choice for business travellers and a great option for those seeking a familiar brand for a stay in Yangon. The view of the Shewadgon Pagoda and Yangon city from the rooftop is a highlight.
Location: the Novotel is well located for both Yangon Airport (20 minutes in a cab) and the Shewadgon Pagoda (10 minutes in a cab).

5 | Savoy Hotel
It’s a step back to the Colonial era with the Savoy Hotel in Yangon. The leafy surrounds are an oasis of calm after embracing the hustle and bustle of Yangon city life and the outdoor pool a welcome escape from the sunshine. With just 30 rooms and incredible decor this intimate hotel is one of our Yagnon favourites.
Location: The hotel is a 20 minute walk from the Shewadgon Pagoda and a taxi ride away from the other city sights.

Saving one of the best to last, the five star Sule Shangri-La is a Yangon downtown gem and the hotel maintains the exquisite Shangri-La brand luxury standards. Elegant and modern the hotel is equipped with amenities such as an outdoor pool and gym and rooms are spacious.
Location: the Sule Shangri-La is excellently located in downtown Yangon. It’s a few minutes walk to Chinatown and the Sule Pagoda, is in the heart of the colonial architecture belt and is close to the Yangon River.
