With its magnificent Gothic Abbey perched atop the island, the picturesque Mont Saint Michel is one of the most popular sites in France. We’ve visited Mont Saint Michel many times and stayed in some incredible hotels, guest houses and inns and we’ve travelled both as a couple and as a family with young children.
Having tried out a variety of accommodations, we wanted to share our recommendations on where to stay in Mont Saint Michel for those of you planning your own visit.
Where to Stay in Mont Saint Michel
There is a mix of accommodations in and around Mont Saint Michel ranging from hotels to chambre d’hôtes (guest houses) and auberges (similar to an inn with a restaurant). We’ve personally stayed in a number of the hotels below and loved the ease of access to the island and the epic views.
Why stay in Mont Saint Michel?
Mont Saint Michel is one of the most beautiful places in all of France and we highly recommend staying overnight to experience its magic and charm.
Due to its popularity as a day trip destination, Mont Saint Michel can get extremely busy from late in the morning to late in the afternoon However, the island is relatively quiet in the early morning and early evening. This is why we recommend staying at Mont Saint Michel – you can enjoy the Mont at its best and most beautiful during these quieter times.
We also adore sunrise and sunset at Mont Saint Michel and staying nearby allows us the opportunity to experience the magic of these.

Note on accessing Mont Saint Michel
Due to the popularity of Mont Saint Michel (it attracts well over 1 million visitors every year) it is not possible to drive over to the island anymore. Mont Saint Micahel is only accessible by the free shuttle bus (Passeur) or by walking from the mainland. For those driving, most of the Mont Saint Michel hotels provide parking or, for day visitors, there is a large car park at the start of the shuttle bus route. We usually rent a car in France as it’s a great way to explore the country and we’ve visited Mont Saint Michel many times by rental car.
Where to Stay in Mont Saint Michel tip: we like to stay within easy access of the shuttle bus stops which ferry visitors from the mainland to Mont Saint Michel. It’s really lovely to park at the hotel and only have a short walk to the shuttle for easy access to the Mont.
Mont Saint Michel Tickets
Access to Mont Saint Michel itself is free but paid tickets are required to access the Mont Saint Michel Abbey which sits atop the Mont. It’s worth booking your skip-the-line tickets in advance to avoid the long queues that crowd onto the island at peak times – check prices now!

There is something surreal about staying overnight on Mont Saint Michel itself. It is incredible to experience Mont Saint Michel without the bustling crowds that are present during the day.
